General Discourse on Paradoxes. So why paradox? Aren't we just talking about opposites? Well maybe, but upon closer look, maybe its not so simple. The opposites are not simply mirror images, but complete oppositely reacting systems, except, of course, where they operate similarlly.
Paradox comes to play more when we add ourselves to the scenario, and we must navigate and make-doo using what we can from either side of the opposites. And why again 'paradox'? Why not 'balance' - peaceful imagery over upside-down conflict. Because even balance is a concept subject to the paradox in that volatility is needed as well as balance to have a healthy, re-generating, "balanced" system.
But I don't really see the paradox thing as bad, this initial dialogue is just for those of you who might think a paradox is a negative. What are some of these paradoxes? Paradox of seeing: only way to see light/dark is to see diminishment or partiality of light/dark. Light is necessary to see, but too much light is blinding. Thus it could be said that dark is necessary to see. Paradox of exploration: Focussed research vs. total openness Xeno's Paradox: this 'classic' could be named Paradox of Location: fixed point vs. endless threshhold a.k.a. digital and analog. Paradox of learning: Where does knowledge hide? 1. the unknown 2. the assumptions
Assumptions vs. Context: both contribute/hinder to communication Minding one's own business vs. "you are who you hang out with" I certainly find evangelists (people who impose their religious beliefs on others) distasteful and rude. It is condecending to the person being spoken to, to attempt to "convert" them to your way of thinking. Yet to the extent that we are a group organism, and our fates are intertwined here on this planet, we should attempt to "help" or change those with beliefs that are dangerous, or those who engage in dangerous actions. |
